DJ Mag Top 100 Dj’s Party Brixton O2 Academy
By: Benji Philips
In recent years there has been a large amount of controversy about DJ Mag’s top 100 poll, and the general consensus is, it’s a load of shit. The same cannot be said however, for the annual Party Held at the O2 in Brixton each year to celebrate the chart's announcement.
This year’s lineup was stellar, featuring Markus Schulz, Armin Van Buuren, W&W, MaRLo, Gouryella, Tenishia and Tom Swoon. Unfortunately, I missed Tenishia’s set, but was able to catch the end of Tom Swoon. He was pleasantly surprising, and finished off with some of the progressive Trance sounds from the Anjunabeats label. Next up was MaRLo who, with his self defined ‘tech-energy’ style, took the crowd by storm, but compared to some of his shows earlier this year he seemed a little off form. After MaRLo came something very special, Ferry Corsten.
Corsten, who revived Gouryella* as a side project last year, has been playing many sets under that name throughout 2016. A combination of philosophy, music and visuals, the Gouryella shows are being lauded as truly the best in Trance, if not all dance music, currently going. I had goosebumps from start to finish.
W&W came on stage next and completely reset the vibe with their boisterous but playful style of DJing with quick song changes and crowd hyping. Everyone was up and jumping for the entire set.
Armin Van Buuren needs no introduction. Having been in the top 5 of the DJ Mag top 100 for 15 years in a row, if you haven’t heard of him, where have you been!? He burst on to the stage with A psy number and kicked off one of the best sets I have ever seen him play (And I’ve seen him 4 times this year alone). Armin always takes the crowd to a very special place and this night was no exception.
Finally Markus Schulz closed down the academy and kept the crowd absolutely buzzing until the last beat.
Overall this is one of the most fun events I have been to over the last year. With great performances from all acts, and surprisingly good production given the venue's limitations. I ached for days afterwards having not danced so hard in ages! But if there is one thing to take from that night, it’s GO AND SEE GOURYELLA!
